After five years away from painting Helgason again picked up the brushes in the beginning of 2012. On the occasion of a symposium on his writing held at Gerðuberg cultural centre in Breiðholt, Reykjavik, in April 2012, he was also invited to show his works in the centre’s foyer. The result was The Picture Hunting Season 2012 (Myndveiðitímabilið 2012). Helgason did a series of his “usual” drawings and then based his paintings on some of those. Instead of painting with oils, as he had done all his life, he now switched over to acrylic, mostly because of allergic reasons. “It was like starting all over again. The first painting was really bad. I guess therefore those paintings are so childlike in all their bright colours and playful style.”
